As much as I adore MonkeyKitty, I must vehemently disagree that it is as simple as thermodynamics. There are other issues at play, be it insulin resistance, addiction, endocrine disruption, etc.
While of course calories do matter, I do not believe them to be the whole of the answer.
Some good reading on the matter would be Mary Enig/Sally Fallon "Eat Fat, Lose Fat", and Gary Taubes "Good Calories, Bad Calories", as well as "Why We Get Fat...".
Sugar and starches have metabolic ramifications far beyond the calories they introduce to your system, so cutting out candy is definitely a step in the right direction.
That said, the "regular food" with which we are all so familiar is actually an array of genetically modified, hormone injected, pesticide-ridden garbage.
Real food=Grass fed, local meats, pastured chicken/eggs, organic veggies, healthy fats (avoid vegetable and seed oils). If my friend stop eating junk food just eat regular food, can he lose weight?
i really doubt 5'9 280 is mostly muscle, that would be equivalent to Markus Ruhl, and if you don't know who that is then

anyway, if he switches to a well balanced healthy diet he will drop weight as long as calories are limitedIf my friend stop eating junk food just eat regular food, can he lose weight?
The only way to lose weight is for the number of calories you burn to be greater than the number of calories you intake. The only way to keep the weight off is by eating a healthy, balanced diet.
It sounds like your friend isn't doing either of these things, so he is unlikely to lose weight, and if he does it will probably come back.
I would suggest he consult a nutritionist to help him make a healthy eating plan that will work for him in the long-term, not just to get the weight off but to keep it off.
