I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup and the Engine Control Unit was broken so I went to a scrapyard and bought a used one. The man at the auto salvage yard told me that some Engine Control Units need to be taken to the dealership and be reprogramed, does anyone know if this is true for my vehicle?Do I need to take my new ECU to the dealership to have it programed?
with newer cars, yes u do...and if your has a prom%26lt;Most dont, but all computers do%26gt; youll need that too....its around 80 dollars to have it programmed and you need your registration with youDo I need to take my new ECU to the dealership to have it programed?
Unless your new computer is programmed to the exact same spec (calibration code on the sticker) as your old one, it will have to be re-programmed.
There are a few other places that do it. The dealership may be able to do it on-site (depending on the adaptability of your unit, and whether they have the right equipment. Most should), or they may have to send it out to one of these specialty shops themselves.
