What should I do to my 4.0L `98 Ford Exploder to get better fuel economy?

I recently purchase a `98 Ford Exploder with the 4.0L in it. For some silly reason the truck is only rated 19-21 MPG on the highway, and I only ever get that when I'm speeding excessively. If I drive at a decent speed, I normal get around 21-26 MPG (most commonly, 23 or 24.) But, still, that's not good enough for me. It's a light vehicle, and small enough engine. Also, the truck isn't very gutsy, I'm guessing anywhere from 160 to 200 HP.

I'm looking to spend $400 to $1000 on the truck to get better fuel consumption and more horsepower. I'm not sure if I want to (or even CAN) get a chip (I've heard good things about chips made by SuperChips,) headers, cold-air-intake, duel exhaust, or something entirely different.

What would you suggest, how much do you estimate it to cost, and what kind of results can I except? Also, what brand(s) would you recommend. Any other tips or secrets about this vehicle you care to pass on would be appreciated, as well. Thanks! What should I do to my 4.0L `98 Ford Exploder to get better fuel economy?
Properly inflated tires and drag free brakes are the most important mechanical items, and using a low viscosity synthetic oil will give you another couple of MPG, A high flow air filter comes next followed by dual exhaust with dual parallel Catalytic converters. A chip may or may not actually improve your fuel economy, but if it actually does it will also reduce the apparent performance. But all these things combined will not improve your economy nearly as much as practicing the techniques detailed at: http://www.hypermiling.com/

Shutting off the engine and coasting?

It will not save a significant amount of fuel.

It will cause loss of power for steering and brakes - possibly causing an accident, and for that reason it is illegal.

It will cause increased wear and likely damage to the transmission.

It will not damage the engine.

Fuel savers?

There is no magic bolt on or mysterious fuel additive which will improve your vehicles fuel economy but keeping your tires properly inflated and checking to make sure that your brakes do not drag are important checks to make.

For far more effective methods to save fuel - without risking damage to your vehicle go to:

By following the driving techniques they recommend I have increased the fuel economy of my 2000 F-250 Super Crew Pick Up Truck from between 12 to 13 MPG average to over 18 MPG average - calculated over multiple tank fillings and distances over 1000 miles! I performed no mechanical modifications beyound making certain the tires were properly inflated, and I am using the same fuel source as I was before I started practicing hypermiling driving techniques. That is a whopping almost 50% improvement in fuel economy simply by changing how I drive!!! And I thought I was a good driver before ... well good maybe but certainly not an efficient one... Theoretically I can get over 22 mpg but I do too much city driving where even the most careful planning is ruined all to often by traffic lights and traffic conflicts but safety comes first and sometimes you simply have to use the brake and throw away some fuel : P ~What should I do to my 4.0L `98 Ford Exploder to get better fuel economy?

Darlin....

The only thing ..I would say is that it probably take 10/30 oil...make sure the tank is at least half full...%26amp; go get a fuel injection....right now if u stick w/ pennzoil/get the fuel injection...at walmart, it is on sale 25-30 dollars...something like that...I Just did that...%26amp; my truck drives 100% smoother...as far as headers go...get on line google it...don't listen to everyone %26amp; their advise...get the facts...know what ur'e talking about %26amp; what u what...if that isn't the right thing for ur'e explorer...keep reading...don't get talked into anything until...U have the facts...Ok?? I don't know how helpful any of this was...but give it a try!! Good Luck, Darlin!!!
