I have a 2006 dodge cummins 5.9. I want better gas milage. I do tow horses every now and then. i have heard bad things about reprograming with superchips on the dodges. I was initialy looking at just putting a K%26amp;N cold air intake on. Then I started looking into exhast and reprograming. What type of performace will I see in my dodge and is it worth is to reprogram or will the intake help? I dont want to do anything that has the potential to limit the life of my truck. I could use some advice. ThanksDiesel performance? Cold air intake superchip and exhaust?
Look into the Smarty or Smarty Jr. Both are great programmers and offer much more options than BullyDog and Superchips.

I have one and will say that is all its cracked up to be! I put it on the fuel economy program (it basically advances the engine timing). I gained 2 mpg easily along with about 40hp (according to MADS). It is a lot more fun to drive now. I keep very detailed records of my vehicles as far as hand calculated mileage, oil changes, oil analysis, etc. I can tell the very first tank of fuel I burned with the Smarty as my mileage increased at that point.
Of all things I would stay away from K%26amp;N on a turbo diesel. I've seen the oil get sucked out of them on more than one occasion. It resulted in the turbo getting a good coat of oil. Since the filter didn't have any oil left in it, it let dust through and gave the turbo and intercooler a good dusting. One was with a filter straight from the factory and the other had been cleaned a couple times. Personally I run an Amsoil microfiber filter, my oil analysis is great too!

Whatever you do. Do not go with Banks. They're overpriced and underpowered for what you get. I've had a couple friends try them out and after a while they were left wanting for more power. They ended up removing the Banks electronics for other power adders. Also Banks' customer service people are some of the worst!Diesel performance? Cold air intake superchip and exhaust?
I have the same truck in a 3/4 ton heavy. Frankly, there is no way I am replacing chips. I don't think the cost benefit is worth while.Diesel performance? Cold air intake superchip and exhaust?

First of all good choice on your truck, it has the best power to mileage ratio, i love the 5.9s. Anyways making a diesel engine breathe better will always give your better mileage its just how much you like to push that little black pedal on the floor. You can't stuff enough air into a diesel if you tried they don't have throttle bodies like gas vehicles, diesels love air and they like to breathe, so exhaust and air intake can't hurt, i do agree though k%26amp;n aren't the greatest filters not only does the oil go in the turbo and intercooler it can wreck your mass air flow sensor, and they can be spendy and your vehicle won't run with out it typically.
For programmers or chips, i personally like edge products, the juice w/ attitude is great, plus it tells you lots of information on your truck as well as give you mileage and/or power. Your engine has lots of potential, it just matters how much money you want to put in it. I have a friend with a 2005 3/4 ton and stock has got 22.5mpg with his 5.9 so if you tune it right and be easy on the throttle you should improve it at least a couple mpgs. Hope i helped. Good luck.
